The Field Organization carries out local activities in various parts of the United States. It performs an important function in regions hit by a natural or civil disaster by organizing emergency communications. It also coordinates various government relief agencies together with other nonprofit organizations especially in disaster hit zones for carrying out relief operations through its emergency communication system.

The organization is the brainchild of Hiram Percy Maxim who was a well established businessman from Connecticut. He came up with the idea after he was able to relay a message to a contact in a nearby town around 15 miles away from him. After the experience, he introduced the idea of establishing a formal club of radio amateurs at their next gathering, and initially, the membership was limited to only a selected few. Later on, the club became incorporated under the local law, but suffered from financial problems. However, it continued to expand rapidly and the need for a more organized setup was felt. Hiram came up with the idea of a magazine which members could subscribe to for a certain fees.

The organization continued to develop over the next few years, but suffered a blow when the Department of Commerce issued a letter addressing all members to take down their antennas during World War 1. However, after the war was over, radio amateurs were given permission to install their antennas again and the organization was restored to its full form. The organization then spread the concept of amateur radio internationally leading to the formation of the International Amateur Radio Union in Newington. The organization was forced to back out again during World War II but once it was over, the activities were permitted again.

Today the ARRL remains the largest representative organization of radio amateurs from around the United States. It is actively involved in various activities, and its services come in very handy especially in disaster hit areas.
